One of the foremost musical artists performing today, William Bennett has raised
the profile of the flute to that of an instrument of subtle tone colours,
dynamics and expression. He studied in London with Geoffrey Gilbert and in Paris
with Jean-Pierre Rampal. He has held principal flute positions with the London
Symphony and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras, the Academy of St
Martin-in-the-Fields and the English Chamber Orchestra. Under the influence of
his teacher and mentor, Marcel Moyse, William Bennet's career developed as an
international soloist and major recording artist. He gained professorships at
the Musik Hochschule in Freiburg and the Royal Academy of London and conducts
masterclasses that attract students world-wide.
He has recorded over 300 musical works from his solo flute repertoire, including
many of his own transcriptions.
In January 1995, the Queen presented him with the Order of the British Empire
for his services to music. In 2002 he was honoured with the NFA (National Flute
Association) Lifetime achievement award in the Washington DC Convention for his
contribution and achievements.
He plays a flute from the atelier of the foremast flute maker, a Louis Lot c
1978.
Clifford Benson is a pianist highly acclaimed for his sensitivity and styrong
feeling for poetry and colour. He enjoys a varied career of performing solo
piano, chamber music and composing. He was the pianist for the Jacqueline du Pre
Masterclasses on BBC TV and was a member of the Nash Ensemble for many years.
The Duo with Levon Chilingirian won first prize in the BBC Beethoven and Munich
Duo Competition.
